MIRS 2021 Call for Proposals

Note: Call for proposals is now closed.

Submissions for presentations, posters, and dissertation talks are being accepted for a one-day research symposium co-hosted by the University of North Texas College of Information and UNT ASIS&T Student Chapter to showcase the research efforts of information scholars and practitioners. The event will be inclusive of workshops, sessions for ongoing and completed papers, posters, and a competition for dissertation presentations. The symposium is being generously funded by the UNT College of Information (COI) and the Department of Information Science with no cost to the attendees or participants.

MIRS 2021 will be held online on April 10, 2021.

Scholars and practitioners at all levels are encouraged to submit their research, keeping in mind that the prompt is “Big Data, Information, and Society,” which is inclusive of, but not limited to, data science, information science, artificial intelligence, data analytics, data visualization, learning technologies, computer science, digital humanities, linguistics, geographical information systems, journalism, and sociology. Just a few examples of topics include:

One of the primary goals of MIRS is to encourage and empower participants who are new to scholarly communication. Therefore, graduate and undergraduate students at all levels and early professionals are highly encouraged to submit their work.

Please email MaryBurke@my.unt.edu or MalakKhader@my.unt.edu with any questions.

Poster presenters will pre-record a short video presentation to accompany their poster and participate in a live Q&A session. Further details will be available by April 1, 2021.

Monetary awards will be given in the following categories:

  • The Linda Schamber Best Paper Award
  • The MIRS Best Poster Award
  • The Best Dissertation Presentation Award
    • These are styled similar to TedTalks; each participant will have 10 minutes to present their work with visual aids. This option is open to all PhD students who have taken their qualifying exams, but have not yet defended their dissertation. Think of this as a chance to practice the dissertation proposal and/ or defense.

Participants interested in competing for the Linda Schamber Best Paper Award will email their full paper (1000 words minumum) by April 3, 2021 to mirs@unt.edu. All other awards are determined based on the presentation given at MIRS 2021.
